The Tech Toc is a clever training tool which gives you feedback on your body rotation as you swim. Good body roll is one of the essentials of a great freestyle technique - it gives you a more efficient and more powerful stroke.
The Tech Toc utilises a ball bearing inside of a plastic capsule containing acoustical amplifiers at each end. As the swimmer rotates their hips while training, the ball hits each end of the capsule, providing the swimmer audible feedback on their hip rotation and movement. The device allows swimmers to hear, as well as feel the rhythm and pace of their stroke pattern and technique.

One of the most popular questions we hear when swimmers are developing their freestyle technique is "how much body roll is enough?" Most drills have swimmers rotating to between 75 and 90° order to exaggerate and learn this important aspect of freestyle. But should you roll 75-90° as you swim? No, you're looking for more like 45-60°.

But how do you know if you're achieving this without using a protractor to measure each and every stroke?! Solution: the Finis Tech Toc. This neat device ties around your waist with the comfortable waist strap and the large black tube which contains a weighted ball bearing aligned at the base of your spine. The ball bearing will only slide and give the unique "TOCK - TOCK - TOCK - TOCK" sound and feeling if you roll with good technique on each stroke. Ingenious!
The real power of the Tech Toc is that it gives you "live" feedback of how you are rotating on each and every stroke. If you don't rotate enough it won't 'tock' on that stroke. This allows you to experiment with your stroke and acts as a constant reminder to maintain your technique during longer swims.
A final tip: Make sure you have the Tech Toc fastened firmly around your waist - not so much that it restricts your breathing but nice and firm so that it doesn't slip. Some women with small waists find the Tech Toc sits better a little lower down over their hips.
